Essex County Council commits to additional grant funding of up to £7.2m for Covid-19 business support

Essex County Council (ECC) has committed to additional grant funding of up to £7.2 million to give Essex businesses the vital support they need to survive in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The fund of up to £7.2 million includes a new Additional Business Support Grant for up to 60,000 self-employed people and small and medium-sized businesses who have previously fallen outside the scope of Covid-19 financial support schemes.

This brings the total business grant support made available by ECC to up to £9.4m with £2.2m already announced on 30 October 2020. An additional £1m in Coronavirus Business Interruption Loans is also available to Essex businesses.

Feedback to Essex County Council from Essex businesses has cited the availability of financial support, along with customer confidence and the length of lockdowns, as having the biggest impacts on their recovery.

The new Additional Business Support funding will make up to £5,000 available to Essex businesses which have been excluded from accessing other Covid-19 financial support schemes. This includes the newly self-employed, businesses who do not have rateable premises and suppliers to industries which have had to remain closed for all or part of the pandemic.

The funds of up to £7.2 million also extend the Essex Business Adaptation Grant scheme until July 2021. This will give many more businesses the opportunity to access grants of up to £1,500 to help them be safer for customers and employees. The grants can also be used to help diversify the way businesses operate, fund new technology and support home working.

The county’s city, district and borough councils are already supporting businesses with their applications for the additional £13m discretionary business grants provided by the government at the start of January. ECC will work closely with our partners to ensure the grant schemes are aligned and together we support as many Essex businesses as possible.

£6.2m of the additional grant funding is available for district councils to bid into immediately with a further £1m to be made available once expected additional funding is released by government.

Visit the financial support page on the Essex County Council website for more information and how to apply for a grant. Businesses can also sign up to the Essex County Council newsletter to hear directly about grant schemes and when applications open.

Further support is available from the BEST Growth Hub which is helping businesses to understand the available grants. Telephone 0300 303 4864.
