Support for Essex pensioners to help with cost-of-living

A £3.2m package of support is being distributed to Essex pensioners to help with the rise in living costs.

The funding is part of the Department for Work and Pensions' (DWP) Household Support Fund (HSF).

Eligible pensioners are those in receipt of means tested benefit and/or in receipt of council tax support.

Our partners in local government have quickly mobilised and will be paying £80 directly into the bank accounts of eligible pensioners, to help with household bills and shopping. In addition, we will be issuing an £80 supermarket voucher directly by post to those who do not share their bank details with their local council over the coming weeks. This can be used at their nearest supermarket.

Essex has received a total of £9.4m from the DWP for the period of April 2022 to September 2022. As well as supporting pensioners, the funding has also helped thousands of households through the Essential Living Fund and the Free School Meals holiday voucher scheme. It has also seen funding distributed through the Citizens Advice Bureau, Voluntary and Community Sector organisations and provided foodbanks with additional money to keep their stocks replenished.

Cllr Louise McKinlay, ECC Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Community, Equality, Partnerships and Performance, said: “The last few years have been hard for everyone, and we know that people across the county continue to feel the strain financially as the cost of living continues to rise.

“These vouchers are one way we are supporting some of the county’s most vulnerable and making sure they have food on their tables.

“Even if you don’t qualify for these vouchers, there is other support available for households and I would urge residents to take a look on our website for more details.”

Residents aged 16+ are also encouraged to contact the Essential Living Fund if they are struggling financially to see if they are eligible.
