Face coverings and exemptions for health or equality reasons
Updated 12 April 2021
You must wear a face covering in many indoor settings, such as shops and places of worship, and on public transport, unless you are exempt or have a reasonable excuse. This is the law. Read guidance on face coverings.
Who is exempt?
Some people are exempt from wearing a face covering in public for health or equality reasons. The government guidance says when you do not need to wear a face covering.
Where to get an exemption card
If you are exempt you may feel more comfortable showing an exemption card. Exemption cards are available from the following organisations:
- Hidden Disabilities
- British Lung Foundation (JPG, 150KB)
- Royal Institute for the Deaf
- Gov.uk template exemption cards
