Hotel plans must be supported by borough council

28 July 2016

Plans to develop land near to Basildon Golf Course will not be agreed without the endorsement of the local borough council, Essex County Council Leader David Finch has said.

The current owner, the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) are looking to sell the site, together with adjoining land that it owns, for a hotel development.

However, when the land was sold in the 1960’s, the County Council placed a covenant restricting the use. The Council has now confirmed that it has refused a request from the HCA to remove the covenant, until a plan is in place that is supported by Basildon Borough Council.

Cllr David Finch, Leader of Essex County Council, said: “We have long supported the important regeneration plans for the Basildon borough, ranging from the development of the Sporting Village to estate regeneration and the more recent capital investment we have made into Basildon Town Centre.

“Providing suitable hotel development would support and develop business and the growing Basildon economy, but this has to be the right sort of development at the right time.

“We have therefore refused the request from the HCA and requested that they work jointly with Basildon Borough Council to bring forward an appropriate scheme, and we will of course look to support them as this develops.”
