How donated devices are helping people across Essex

As part of our digital devices campaign, Digital Essex is asking businesses to donate unused laptops, tablets and phones to help children across Essex who don’t have the devices they need for learning.

With many businesses moving away from Windows 10, lots of devices are no longer suitable for work use - but they can still be repurposed to support a child’s education.

Recently, 75 laptops were donated to NEEDAST (North East Essex Digital Access Support Team), who help people build confidence and learn basic digital skills. These laptops are already making a big difference:

AMM (Age 18–25)

AMM cannot speak and has difficulty moving. English isn’t his first language.
Impact: The laptop helps him communicate, learn English, and stay in touch with doctors and family abroad. He now has new opportunities and hopes to use a speech programme soon.

KE (Age 75–85)

KE lives alone and couldn’t afford a device.
Impact: He’s learning to use a laptop, watching football, sending emails, and staying connected with loved ones.

S (Age 50–60)

S is shy and didn’t feel confident using technology.
Impact: She’s using a loaned laptop and taking part in a 12-week learning course. Her confidence is growing and she’s keen to keep learning.

MO (Age 18–25)

MO is a refugee from Syria. He faced persecution and had to leave school early.
Impact: The laptop helps him improve his English, apply for jobs, and take part in a digital skills course. He’s hopeful about finding work soon.

NE (Age 26–35)

NE is an asylum seeker from Ghana. He’s building his legal case without a solicitor.
Impact: The laptop helps him contact the Home Office, gather documents, and apply for jobs. It’s boosted his confidence and wellbeing.

AHS (Age 18–25)

AHS is from Kuwait and struggles with English.
Impact: The laptop gives him access to language tools, online learning, and vital information to help him settle in.

LZ (Age 18–25)

LZ speaks English as a second language.
Impact: The laptop helps her with homework, studying, and staying in touch with friends. It’s improving her digital skills for the future.

The impact is huge - and it’s growing. We’re so grateful for the support and hope more businesses will get involved.”
