Find technology and equipment that can help people with care needs stay independent

What is care technology?

In recent years, new technology has helped people live independently.

Read about some examples below, and learn more about which care technology could be right for you with the Milbrook self-assessment tool.

Free communication tools

Inclusive Communication Essex (ICE) is an Essex-wide training package for families and carers of adults with learning disabilities. It teaches them how to use different forms of communication.

ICE offers advice and loans communication tools and aids free of charge. These include talking photo albums and the GoTalk, which can help a non-verbal person speak.

Digital assistants

Examples of these include Google Home and Amazon Echo. These can allow you to control lights, heating and more with your voice.

Staying safe

Examples include:

  • wearable alarms and devices that show your family where you are if you get lost
  • video doorbells
  • lights that come on when you move

Services such as Care Call can help with this.

Staying in touch

Examples include:

  • keeping in touch with friends and family with video calls
  • tools to help non-verbal people communicate, by pressing a picture to speak
