Register a death

Find out what you need to do to register a death in Essex.

Registering a death by declaration

If the death took place outside of Essex, it should be registered in the registration district where the death took place.

However, you can register by declaration in Essex if you:

  • are a qualified informant
  • live in Essex
  • are unable to travel to the registration district where the death took place

You must meet all three of these criteria to register by declaration.

How to book an appointment to register a death by declaration

The hospital or GP needs to send the necessary paperwork to the registration office in the district where the death took place. You must confirm that the paperwork has been sent before booking an appointment in Essex. We cannot offer you an appointment if the paperwork has not been sent.

When you contact us, we will then arrange with the other district for the paperwork to be forwarded on to us before your appointment.

Email registration@essex.gov.uk to book an appointment to register a death by declaration. Your appointment will last approximately 30 minutes.

Important information about registering a death by declaration

Please be aware that we cannot issue any paperwork or death certificates at your declaration appointment. This may delay the funeral arrangements.

After your appointment we will send the declaration paperwork to the registration district where the death took place. It is then up to them to register the death and issue any death certificates and associated paperwork.
