Becoming a Supported Lodgings carer changed our family

Brian and his wife began their journey into Supported Lodgings a few years ago

With a desire to make a difference, and a spare room available, Brian's family decided to start Supported Lodgings. As you help young people, rather than younger children, Supported Lodgings is flexible. It fits around your work commitments, with support for your whole family. Brian and his wife have a (then) twelve-year-old son, who is embracing the experience too.

“Our worry was how our 12-year-old birth son would adjust, especially as an only child. When we started, we soon realised we had nothing to worry about! He has really enjoyed the process.”

Now, Brian and his family have helped three young people so far.

“It’s just like having another member of the family at home. The young people we support integrate themselves into our lives.

One of the (few) rules we have is that they always join us for meals when they’re home. This helps them to bond with us and get to know each other a lot better.”

Supported Lodgings offers young people stability

Brian and his wife take the young people in their care on day trips to the seaside, into London. Plus, they are still in touch with those who have moved on.

“The hardest part is when they leave,” Brian said. “Our son has formed a strong bond with each young person, so he finds it tough when they leave. But he understands it’s important for them to move on and continue to grow.”

Training and support has been key for Brian's family, including his son

Essex County Council offer outstanding support and training for you and your family.

“During our application, our social worker was really lovely and helped support us through the process. Training modules help you understand about caring for young people with trauma too.

"My wife works with deaf and blind people and I’m a carer too, so we’re used to regular training. But the resources have still been really helpful.

Our son even did a short training course on trauma and really enjoyed learning too. The training and support have given us the confidence to support any young person that comes into our care.”

Brian's advice for Supported Lodgings carers

Brian is candid about the realities of caring. “These are children who have been through a lot and in some cases dealt with serious trauma. What they need is a stable, loving environment—a peaceful place to live. That’s what helps them become happier individuals.”

His advice to others considering caring? “Go for it. The training was really interesting and  being able to bring about positive change in a young person’s life is super rewarding."
