Essex and Suffolk Water, working with Connexin and supported by Essex County Council, have started putting smart water meters in Chelmsford. This is part of a bigger plan to fit 300,000 smart meters across Essex by 2030. The project is backed by £1.5 billion over five years.
How the technology works
In December 2024, Connexin put special devices called LoRaWAN gateways on 50 lampposts in Chelmsford. These help send water meter readings over the internet. Essex County Council, through Digital Essex, helped by allowing the use of their lampposts.
Why it’s important
The smart meters help find leaks more quickly, cut down on wasted water, and save money. The project also created jobs and helped local businesses.
What’s happening next
The second part of the project started in January 2025, with 75 more gateways added. Between 2 and 9 June, 30 more were installed in the CM3 area, and work is continuing in CM8 and CM9.
The benefits for everyone
People with smart meters used up to 20% less water and saved on their energy bills. The project will help protect the environment, support the local economy, and make water services better for everyone.
