A new pilot project will help boost 4G connectivity in Colchester. We are working with connectivity infrastructure provider Freshwave on the project.

Freshwave will install small cell technology on lampposts on behalf of a mobile network operator. This will boost the existing mobile network in the city. Small cells are ideal for enhancing mobile coverage in busy urban areas.

Improving digital connectivity is one of our key priorities. Our Digital Strategy for Essex sets out how we will improve mobile coverage by 2025. Part of this is allowing networks to use public buildings, assets, and land to boost connectivity.

Councillor Lee Scott, Essex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Planning a Growing Economy, said:

We are proud to trial this initiative in Essex, setting the stage for enhanced connectivity in our communities.

This fantastic collaboration between Essex County Council, Essex Highways and Freshwave will support our aims for Levelling Up Essex by giving our residents and businesses the tools they need to thrive. Digital connectivity is essential to achieving a prosperous and equitable Essex and this project is a significant stride towards achieving that vision.

Boosting 4G connectivity in Colchester will strengthen the city's role as a hub for tech and creative industries. It will also provide opportunities to help new and existing businesses grow. This will help create more jobs and enable residents to build their skills.

The collaboration with Freshwave also supports Colchester City Council’s strategy and vision for the city centre.
