Bespoke Multiply maths skills sessions are being delivered to prisoners at HMP Chelmsford.

Prisoners are learning maths skills via a special curriculum. Colchester Institute is running the sessions. Their money management course focuses on using numbers in prison and on release.

Following a pilot, the project will be a permanent addition to the prison’s learning offer. This means many more prisoners will have the opportunity to improve their maths. More learners are already signed up to take part.

Multiply is a £270 million programme managed by the Department for Education (DfE). We are delivering the Essex programme over the next three years after securing £7.9 million.

It will create 14,200 new opportunities for Essex residents to improve their maths. It will also enable local businesses to upskill their employees for free. Maths is essential to our everyday lives and we use it more than we realise.

Multiply courses are being delivered as part of efforts to improve adult numeracy in Essex. Courses are available to help parents and carers. There are also courses to help adults aged 19 and over manage their personal finances and feel confident using numbers at work.
