Celebrating World Social Work Day 2024

We are celebrating the importance of social work this World Social Work Day.

The day is organised by the International Federation of Social Workers. It sees social workers around the globe come together to celebrate the profession. This year’s theme is ‘Buen Vivir: Shared Future for Transformative Change’.

Social workers, work across adults, families and children’s services, supporting some of the most vulnerable people in the county. This could be by protecting vulnerable people from harm or abuse or helping people to live independently in their own home.

Councillor John Spence, Cabinet Member for Health, Adult Social Care and ICS Integration, said:

Social work is a challenging and diverse profession, but it is also one of the most rewarding. It is often misunderstood and that is why it is so important that we recognise the hard work and positive impact that social workers have on the lives of vulnerable children, families and adults.

They are unsung heroes - extraordinary people doing extraordinary work so that we can live ordinary lives. World Social Work Day is a chance for us to celebrate all their efforts.

Councillor Beverley Egan, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services and Early Years, said:

Our social work staff do an amazing job, often in very difficult circumstances. Their efforts are so important to our work supporting vulnerable adults and children in Essex and our services would not be what they are without the excellence of our workforce. Our Outstanding children’s services truly are a testament to them.

It is important that we recognise the vital role they play, not just on World Social Work Day, but every day of the year, and I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone working in the profession across Essex.

The Essex Social Care Academy has been marking World Social Work Day with a number of events and activities. This includes mindfulness sessions, self-reflection activities and sharing of messages of thanks.
