Pupil-run eco shops demonstrate Everyone’s Essex commitment

Three pupils sort recycled materials into boxes with help from a teacher.

We set out five goals in Everyone’s Essex to improve the lives of children and families.

Essex Year of Numbers is one result of these aims. It inspires a love of learning for all with a focus on numeracy.

This year, the initiative provided toolkits to help 41 schools set up eco refill shops.

It saw pupils aged nine and above run their own green businesses from the playground once a month.

Each shop stocked eco-friendly refill packs for bodywash, handwash and household cleaning products.

Families and staff were able to buy the products worth £200, with all profits put towards future stock.

The Eco Refill Project taught business skills and environmental awareness in an accessible way.

It is just one example of how Essex Year of Numbers helps deliver on our aims for all children.

Councillor Tony Ball, Cabinet Member for Education Excellence, Lifelong Learning and Employability, said: “Essex Year of Numbers empowers children of all ages to develop a lifelong love for numeracy.

“We want all children across Essex to feel more comfortable and confident when working with numbers. Initiatives such as the ECO Refill project, which strengthen business acumen, whilst also encouraging fun and creativity, play a crucial role in making children feel at ease with maths."

You can now read our Everyone’s Essex pledge refreshed for 2024/25. It details five key priorities, including children and families.

We promise to continue improving outcomes for the most vulnerable. We will also continue to deliver educational excellence and high standards for all.
