New special school could increase in size

The size of a new special school in south Essex could potentially increase. This would mean it can support more pupils with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND).

The new school will be split between two sites - one in Rayleigh and one in South Woodham Ferrers. It will open as an all-through school supporting pupils from KS1 through to KS4.

It was originally confirmed that the school would have 190 places. If this latest decision is agreed, this will increase to 252 places. 150 of these would be at the site on the Wolsey Park development in Rayleigh. 102 would be at the former Chetwood Primary School in South Woodham Ferrers.

The proposed increase comes following a previous change to the design and configuration of the school.

Our Cabinet will make the decision about increasing the school on 26 June.

This includes allocating a further £13 million to cover increased building costs. This funding would come from the High Needs Provision Capital Allocation grant.
