Smart water infrastructure installed in Maldon

New technology has been installed in Maldon to help detect water leaks. This in turn helps reduce waste and saves householders money.

The district is now home to a new Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN). The network is designed to improve water services across the area.

Connexin, in partnership with Essex and Suffolk Water, has installed special devices called LoRaWAN gateways on street lighting columns.

These devices send water meter data over the network. This enables faster detection of leaks, reducing water waste and helping households save money.

We joined representatives of Connexin, Essex & Suffolk Water and Maldon MP Sir John Whittingdale on a visit to see the new technology.

The devices are mounted on street lighting columns and are so discreet that you’re unlikely to notice them unless you know what to look for.

The tour offered a closer look at how this subtle, yet powerful infrastructure is quietly transforming how water services are managed across Essex. It forms part of a project led by Essex and Suffolk Water that we are supporting.

Councillor Peter Schwier, Cabinet Member for Environment, Waste Reduction and Recycling, said: "This is a forward-thinking initiative that aligns perfectly with Essex County Council’s commitment to sustainability and resource efficiency.

“I’m proud to see Essex leading the way in adopting smart infrastructure that not only modernises our public assets, but also contributes meaningfully to our environmental goals.”

Councillor Tom Cunningham, Cabinet Member for Highways, Infrastructure and Sustainable Transport, added: "This marks a great step toward unlocking new uses for our existing street furniture.

“Transforming street lighting columns into assets that enhance innovation in infrastructure is a fantastic way to improve the way we live and work in our communities.”
