Essex libraries will offer a speech-recognition app for this year's Summer Reading Challenge.
We have teamed up with Fonetti, which gives instant feedback as children read aloud.
The app helps keep children engaged in reading with games, rewards and leaderboards. It also helps build confidence in speaking.
The partnership comes from the Essex Year of Opportunity. This is our project to remove barriers into education, work and upskilling for all ages.
The theme of this year's Summer Reading Challenge is Story Garden. This encourages children to explore the magical connection between storytelling and nature. It includes beautiful illustrations by award-winning illustrator Dapo Adeola.
Children will be challenged to read six books or complete various book-related activities. They’ll collect stickers as they go to earn a certificate and medal at the end.
Children can choose any library book they like. There is also a special reading challenge for kids under the age of four.
As well as the Summer Reading Challenge, children can take part in the National Read-Aloud Challenge through Fonetti at the same time.
Parents, carers, and schools can download the app for free online.
