Way forward for future of Greater Essex councils

The three seaxes of Essex in white against a red background.

We have confirmed a preference for three unitary councils in Greater Essex in the future. This is part of the Government’s plans local government reorganisation (LGR). LGR is the process in which the structure and responsibilities of local authorities are reconfigured.

The preferred number is based on evidence gathered to date and the criteria set by government. Alongside our own data gathering, independent research has been carried out to consider the benefits of different LGR options for residents and associated costs. We have analysed this and carefully considered the outcomes within the context of the Government’s criteria.

Our conclusion is the evidence points clearly toward three unitaries striking the right balance between being able to provide essential services while keeping costs low – for residents and councils. We want a system which is simpler for residents, cheaper for residents, and offers better services for residents.

Work will continue to develop the Business Case for Greater Essex, which will put forward three councils. This is due to be submitted to the Government by 26 September.

Other councils in Essex are currently also developing alternative business cases based on a higher number of councils.
