Register a birth

Where to register a birth

You must register your baby within 42 days of their date of birth.

All babies born in Essex should be registered here. This does not include Southend or Thurrock, who register births separately.

If you’re unsure which district to register your baby in, you can check on the find a register office tool on GOV.UK.

If you live in Essex but your baby was born somewhere else in England or Wales, you can still register the birth here.

We will forward your information to the district where your baby was born. They will send the certificates to you. This generally adds 10 days to the registration process.

If your baby was born abroad, you should register them according to the rules in that country.
