What you must do if you want to educate your child at home

If your child is at school, you need to write to the headteacher to let them know you have decided to educate them at home.

If your child is on roll at a special school, you must gain prior consent from the local authority if you wish to remove your child from the school to home educate them.

Once the school has received notification, in writing, of your decision to home educate, they have a duty to inform the local authority of their reasons for removing your child from their registers and to share any concerns they may have about your decision. Essex County Council maintains a register of all home education arrangements that are either shared with the local authority by schools or academies or by parents who have registered with us directly.
