A ceremony for a new residential development in Waltham Abbey was held on Thursday 27 July. The event marks a key milestone in the construction of the development at the site of the former Shernbroke Hostel. Once complete, 26 new homes will be available at the site.

The new homes are being delivered by Essex Housing, our in-house property developer. Work started in August 2022 and the redundant hostel building has been demolished.

Once complete, the scheme will feature two apartment blocks. These will incorporate 10 modern apartments for adults with learning disabilities. Chelmer Housing Partnership will take ownership of all the completed homes.

Councillor Tom Cunningham, Cabinet Member for Planning a Growing Economy, said:

This site is a perfect example of how Essex Housing is helping to deliver the new homes our county so desperately needs. We are also shaping great places for our residents to live and providing a return to the taxpayer. I’m delighted that we are now one step closer to delivering this scheme and look forward to seeing it progress.

The development is part of more than 1,000 new homes Essex Housing is delivering in the next five years. Half of these are specialist or affordable housing to help older people and people with disabilities to live independently.
