New inclusive versions of a children’s picture book series have been published. Our We Care, You Share series is designed for children receiving support from social care.

Developed with children and young people, the books were written by author James Henry and illustrated by Valeria Valenza. In the books, friendly characters take young readers on different journeys to explore difficult subjects.

Working with Widgit, we have released symbol versions of the We Care, You Share series. The new versions of the books will ensure children with disabilities and their families can benefit from the stories.

Councillor Beverley Egan, Essex County Council Cabinet Member for Children’s Services and Early Year’s, said:

We want our children’s services to be as inclusive as possible. This is particularly important as we marked International Day of Persons with Disabilities on Sunday (3 December).

The new symbol versions of our We Care, You Share series will help empower children with disabilities and their families, ensuring they feel heard and supported.

They will also serve as valuable educational tools. Teachers, professionals and care givers will be able to use these books promote learning and inclusivity within their settings, benefitting young people with extra needs across Essex and beyond.

I am incredibly excited to see that more children will be able to benefit from our much-loved picture books, and look forward to seeing the impact they make with families.

The We Care, You Share books are on:

  • having a social worker
  • living with family members who are not parents
  • coming into care
  • reunification and sibling separation
  • adoption and living with a new family
