Our role in planning

Includes our roles as minerals and waste planning authority, highways authority and statutory consultee

Local planning

Each of the 12 borough, district or city councils in Essex is a Local Planning Authority. They’re responsible for producing a Local Plan to shape development of their area.

They’re also responsible for determining planning applications in their area. This excludes minerals or waste developments, or those relating to county council developments. See below for your local authority's planning section.

Local authorities have a statutory duty to work with us in the preparation of their Local Plans. We need to take part in our capacity in the roles outlined above.

We’re keen to support planning authorities’ Local Plans, development strategies and policies. This ensures our communities are sustainable and have the services they need.
