Register a death

Where to register a death

Deaths must be registered within 5 days. If the death is being investigated by the Coroner this might not be possible.

If the death occurred in Essex, it should be registered here. This does not include Southend or Thurrock who register deaths separately.

You can check where the nearest register office is using the find a register office tool on GOV.UK.

If that’s not possible, you can go to any register office in England or Wales and they will send the documents us. This generally adds 10 days to the process, and will cause a delay in receiving the documents you need to arrange the funeral.
