Births, ceremonies and deaths

Registrations

Our registration service remains open on a restricted basis.

We'll keep the website updated in line with the latest announcements from the government.

Register a birth

The Government have confirmed that birth registration can now resume. We have made our offices safe and a new booking method has been introduced.

For now, we are starting with babies born up to and including 30 May 2020. Please do not book an appointment if your child was born after 30 May 2020.

Register a birth

You can make a claim for child benefit or universal credit before the registration of a birth.

Marriage and civil partnership ceremonies

Ceremonies of marriage and civil partnership formations can take place from Saturday 4 July 2020.

We are currently prioritising existing bookings made prior to lockdown, and not taking any additional bookings at this stage.

For Essex Register Office ceremonies, maximum attendance is 7 until further notice.This includes the couple, two registrars and two witnesses.

At community venues and approved venues, up to 30 individuals can attend the ceremony. This includes the couple, two registrars, two witnesses and any staff such as photographers. Couples will need to contact their venue to understand how many the venue can accommodate, while observing social distancing.

Please be aware, we are experiencing a high volume of enquiries therefore please do not call. We will continue to update this page with service information.

For all existing bookings up to 31 October 2020, we will proactively contact customers in priority order.

Notice of marriage or civil partnership

The Government has confirmed that notice appointments can now resume.

We are commencing a phased return.

If your ceremony is due to take place before 31 August 2020 and you have not yet given notice, we will contact you.

Weddings at Cressing Temple Barns and Essex Record Office

Weddings at Cressing Temple Barns and Essex Record Office are suspended until the end of June 2020 at the earliest.

We will not be taking any new bookings for 2020 and 2021 at this time.

Citizenship ceremonies

No ceremonies can currently take place, but existing citizenship certificates have been extended by the Home Office from 3 months to 6 months.

Register a death

You can book a phone appointment to register a death.

Death registration appointments are available on weekdays.

Funerals can take place, attended by immediate family only. Our guidance on funerals and mourning has more information.

Register a stillbirth

You can book a phone appointment to register a stillbirth. Please call us on 0345 603 7632 to arrange an appointment.

Errors on certificates

If there's an error on a birth, death, marriage or civil partnership certificate please contact us by email at registration@essex.gov.uk or phone 0345 603 7632.

There may be a fee payable to apply for a correction to a certificate depending upon the circumstances. In most cases evidence will be required in order to request a correction.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic there are currently delays in dealing with requests for corrections.
